  THE KINETICS OF GLYCEROL DEGRADATION USING MULTI MODE MICROWAVE

Abstrak : Abstract: This research aimed to study the influence of power, reaction time and the kind of catalyst on degradation of glycerol using microwave heating. Degradation of glycerol was carried out at power of 300-700 Watt, reaction time range of 10-30 minutes and catalyst type of H3PO4/AC and phosphotungstic acid. As a result, the catalyst of phosphotungstic acid/AC gave better performance than H3PO4/AC reviewed from the surface area. The surface area were 768.94 and 591.88 m2/g for phosphotungstic acid/AC and H3PO4/AC. The degradation of glycerol using microwave heating with H3PO4/AC and phosphotungstic acid/AC produced methanol, acrolein, acetaldehyde, allyl alcohol, and un-identified product. The reaction temperature was uncontrolled and fluctuated but it increased with the increasing power. The profile of product was affected by the power. The product increased with increasing power, but at higher power, products undergo further reaction. The rate of glycerol degradation using catalyst of H3PO4/AC could be expressed by:-rA = 2.075EXP(-13.76/RT) CA and for the catalyst of phosphotungstic acid/AC could be expressed by: -rA = 0.449EXP(-7.85/RT) CA Keywords: Degradation, glycerol, microwave, H3PO4/AC, phosphotungstic acid/AC.
